The flower-power era lives on this bright collection of popular folk tunes from the 1960s and early '70s performed by a cast primarily of child vocalists. The clear, earnest voices here seem wholly appropriate for these hopeful, forward-looking songs of tolerance and love. Such standards of the genre as "The Circle Game" and "Both Sides Now" by Joni Mitchell and "Puff the Magic Dragon" and "If I Had a Hammer," which were hits for Peter, Paul and Mary, are among the best-known selections here. "Mr. Tambourine Man," written by Bob Dylan, kicks off the proceedings that also include songs by James Taylor and Carole King and two tunes each by songwriters Donovan Leitch, Cat Stevens and Paul Simon. Though the singing may sometimes remind adult listeners of attending a middle-school concert (albeit a very good one), many kids will likely delight in discovering these "oldies" as sung by their contemporaries. Throughout, the standout guitar work and supporting vocals by producer/musician Sudhananda (who also plays piano, bass and harmonica, among other instruments) help make this a well-crafted and compelling recording. All ages. (Sept.)
