URGE: Hot Secrets for Great Sex

Gabrielle Morrisey, . . Thorsons, $22.95 (320pp) ISBN 978-0-00-714933-9

Having "peeked through the keyhole of our collective bedrooms," "sexologist" Morrissey (Sex in the Time of Generation X) reveals naughty secrets and probes every corner of our carnal lives in this self-described "sexposé." Currently heading the Sexology program at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Australia, Morrissey draws largely from interviews of her countrymen, supplementing their anonymous, leave-nothing-to-the-imagination remarks with quasi-historical details, sex surveys, quizzes, Kinsey statistics and a resource guide. Despite the eye-catching cover and humorous, slang-filled narrative, Morrissey does provide frank, practical advice in such chapter headings as Speedy Gonzales (premature ejaculation), Master of Your Domain (pleasing yourself) and Little Boy Blue Lost His Wood (understanding and solving erectile problems). While many topics may hit home with readers (such as "virtual cheating" via the Internet, birth control options and efficacy rates, and tips on spicing up stale sex lives), some information—such as how to break into the porn industry, caloric value of ejaculate, and disadvantages to sex while high on Special K, mushrooms, or ecstasy—seems less useful, even for the young, experimental demographic to which this book is targeted.
