The Search for Structure: A Report on American Youth Today

Francis A. J. Ianni. Free Press, $27.95 (336pp) ISBN 978-0-02-915360-4

In a study that spans a decade of research and observation of adolescents, major recurring themes are identified and addressed. Ianni, director of the Institute of Social Analysis at Teachers' College, Columbia University, began in the 1970s, from interviews with young people in 10 communities throughout the United States, to evaluate positive as well as stereotypically unfavorable qualities about them. A wealth of material emerges, gathered from urban, inner-city, affluent suburban and rural youth, from their parents, teachers and community organizations. Primary among the conclusions Ianni draws from the study is that teens, despite the pervasiveness of peer pressure, look to significant adults for guidance in the important periods of their development. He pinpoints successful approaches, programs and community activities for adolescents. The book is a worthwhile resource for those involved with helping young people make the transition to adulthood.
