Looking Up: The Complete Guide to Looking and Feeling Good for the Recovering Cancer Patient

Suzy Kalter. McGraw-Hill Companies, $18.95 (249pp) ISBN 978-0-07-033252-2

Kalter (coauthor of Kathryn Klinger's First Book of Beauty, etc.), a recovering cancer patient, offers a guide for women cancer patients that makes other beauty books appear frivolous by comparison. Her chattiness is more than compensated for by compassion, integrity and excellent, detailed information on the cosmetic effects of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. Inspiring hope and visual and mental acceptance of cancer's ravages, Kalter asserts that ""when mum's the word, women suffer.'' Therefore, she authoritatively covers virtually every situation: choosing wigs and breast prostheses, disguising ostomies, makeup tips for eyes without lashes or brows, reconstructive surgery, postmastectomy exercises, etc. Kalter encourages flexibility and a sense of humor throughout, and readers will find here some photos of beautiful cancer patients boldly sporting bald pates.
