Testostero

David Foster. Penguin Books, $8.95 (188pp) ISBN 978-0-14-009631-6

Australian writer Foster (The Pure Land, Moonlite) introduces us to triplets who have been separated since birth: Noel Horniman, heterosexual poet and pool attendant; Leon Hunnybun, homosexual art lover and psychologist; and Cortesana Lottotatz, transsexual and the object of Horniman's lust. Horniman and Hunnybun first meet in Venice and soon find identical birthmarks you know where. They go to London and swap identities, confusing everyone, especially the reader. In an effort to find out which of them is heir to their father's estate, they return to Venice and discover the third lost brother, whose birthmark vanished with his sex change operation and who, incidentally, ""ruined fifteen pairs of pantyhose before he/she gained/lost the hang of it.'' There is nothing terribly profound in this novel, but it's good for a few laughs, as the author intends. (October)
