A Rumbly Tumbly Glittery Gritty Place

Mary Lyn Ray, Author, Douglas Florian, Illustrator Houghton Mifflin Harcourt P $13.95 (0p) ISBN 978-0-15-292861-2
``One person's eyesore is another person's natural wonder'' might well be an alternate title for this lightweight and somewhat misguided picture book. Ray ( Pumpkins ) again infuses her writing with a reverence for the environment. This time she asks readers to appreciate the unlikely beauty of a local gravel pit. A child cavorts upon the stones and imagines mountains and beaches out of the rocky expanse. He also envisions the grassy field that will one day take the pit's place. Unfortunately, the text and Florian's muddy watercolors depict an unsupervised child and his dog playing at a work site that is sure to abound with heavy machinery--not a good idea under any circumstances. While respect and admiration for Mother Nature in her many guises is certainly an important concept, this book serves up a confusing interpretation of the message. Ages 3-8. (Oct.)
