Toward a True Kinship of Faiths: How the World’s Religions Can Come Together

His Holiness the Dalai Lama, read by Richard Gere, Random House Audio, unabridged, five CDs, 6 hrs., $32 ISBN 978-0-3077-1295-0

The Dalai Lama’s personal stories of religious reconciliation are the best part about this audiobook, which weaves anecdotes about his conversations with some of the world’s most impressive leaders alongside His Holiness’s ideas about how we might engender peace among the world’s religions. Although his compassion-based prescriptions for an end to religious violence may strike readers as naïve, the book is sweetly sincere, and actor Richard Gere brings a quiet sensitivity to the audio production. Gere’s narration is sometimes inspired, and his gentle timbre and occasional flash of humor do much to capture the Dalai Lama’s own style. The CD is enhanced by interstitial music of Buddhist monks chanting, which lends a peaceful feel. A Doubleday hardcover. (May)
