Convertible Crochet: Customizable Designs for Stylish Garments

Doris Chan. Potter Craft, $21.99 trade paperback (144p) ISBN 978-0-307-96570-7

The author and her publisher follow up the lovely book Crochet Lace Innovations with another collec-tion of 22 stunning lace patterns. Chan works in a module style, explaining how to make one motif and then expand it into stylish wraps, dresses, and scarves. Chan's use of lace makes her designs both clas-sic and hip, avoiding the bulky heaviness that regular crochet can have. In her Angular Momentum chapter, for example, one rectangular module can be expanded into the Austen-esque Corsair Collar, the hip Fairlane Jacket, or the breathtaking, convertible stole/wrap T-Bird. While instructions are clear, and patterns are written with the utmost clarity, these patterns are not for the faint of heart or the be-ginning crocheter. It says a great deal that Chan does not provide basic crocheting instructions in the book; the stitcher who attempts these will need to be well beyond learning what a double chain is. For those with the skills, though, what a treat this lovely book will be. Full-color photos. (June)
