Enticed by the Light: The Terrifying Story of One Woman's Encounter with the New Age

Sharon Beekmann. Zondervan Publishing Company, $10.99 (208pp) ISBN 978-0-310-21003-0

This testimonial of psychotherapist Beekman's involvement and ultimate break with the occult and New Age is a tale of a woman's search for spiritual truth. Along the way to her conversion to Christianity, Beekman encountered a number of New Age groups, including psychics and channelers, who touted to her that participation therein would show her the light. So deep was her involvement with these groups that even after her conversion to Christianity, Beekman has trouble locating experienced counselors who can help rid her of the tormenting voices that speak to her ""mind to mind."" One of the voices Beekman claims to have channeled belonged to ""Seth,"" the spirit that was introduced to her through Jane Roberts's popular books Seth Speaks and The Coming of Seth. Beekman also encounters spirits who frequently surround themselves with light, hence the book's imitative title, and she teaches here that an experience with the supernatural should not be judged as valid merely on the kind or amount of light that spiritual beings produce. Though Beekman's story is gripping and the reader shares the sense of evil that besets the author in her experiences, her story moves back and forth in time so frequently to offer anecdotal material that the story bogs down.
