Crystal

Helen Ashfield. St. Martin's Press, $0 (173pp) ISBN 978-0-312-01028-7

In this latest of the Regency Jewel series, Ashfield (Topaz, Opal, Sapphire) introduces Crystal, a devastating beauty as well as an entrepreneur. Emerging from a brutalized childhood in the London stews, or slums, Crystal is employed by a kindly jeweler, a connoisseur of collectible snuff boxes, whose shop is frequented by Beau Brummell and other elegants, including the Earl of Melfort who wins Crystal's love. But their union is thwarted by a cruel social hoax in which Brummell has an unwitting role and Crystal, thrown on her own resources, goes into business for herself. Thriving as an independent though unmarried woman, she eventually brings the lovelorn Earl to his senses. The lore of snuff and elegant boxes is threaded through this contrived period entertainment.
