One Barber's Story: From Sicily to America

Pasquale Spanguolo, Pasquale Spagnuolo. St. Martin's Press, $18.95 (102pp) ISBN 978-0-312-11872-3

A sort of Grandma Moses of the printed page, ``Pat'' Spagnuolo sets down in simple prose the particulars of his life in Sicily and Manhattan and of his tonsorial career. His text is supplemented by numerous sidebars about the famous whose hair he cut (Winston Churchill, Johnny Carson, S.N. Berman) and the details of administering a scalp-treatment shampoo and a facial massage. Because his Arcade Barber Shop was located in the same building as the New Yorker, it even got two mentions in ``The Talk of the Town'' over the years. Spagnuolo, who is now retired, also writes of his passion for hunting and his fondness for his beagles. A pleasant if totally inconsequential memoir. (Apr.)
