Wicked Lies

Lora Leigh. St. Martin’s, $7.99 mass market (352p) ISBN 978-0-312-38911-6

This pallid sequel to Loving Lies reads like a poor imitation of a Leigh novel: the characters’ emotions are always on high, their lust never waivers, and the supposedly brave heroine still needs a strong hero to save her. Kenni Maddox went into hiding at age 16 after her mother’s murder and a failed attempt on Kenni’s life. Wanting to protect those she loved, but unsure whether they were trustworthy or part of the plot, she remained on the run for years before returning to Loudon, Tenn., disguised as Annie Mayes. Kenni disappeared without knowing that 23-year-old Jazz Lancing loved her. His intense attraction to Annie baffles him, and he wonders what she’s hiding. Once the dominant, sexually aggressive Lancing discovers her true identity, he vows to protect her, and to keep her. Their sex-fueled romance and efforts to unmask Kenni’s mother’s killers are made even more melodramatic by her decision to remain in hiding for so long. Agent: Robin Rue, Writer’s House. (Sept.)
