Cliched prose further mars this flimsy first novel about love and greed amid the heady worlds of high-stakes business and pro basketball. Jessica, a sexy, young attorney who acquired her polish at Vassar and Yale Law School, quits the indigent clients whose tenants' rights she had been protecting in order to put together multimillion-dollar real estate deals, and eventually becomes the owner of an ailing New York basketball franchise. Kanter, a Harvard Business School graduate, makes the book's forays into the financial scene read like keenly observed true experiences, and she also is successful in highlighting the strength of women's friendships (four upwardly mobile types chisel out the time to meet for monthly dinners, year after year). But the characters, including Jessica, and most of the settings are pat and stereotypical. (Jan.)
