Game Plans for Success: Winning Strategies for Business and Life Form 10 Top NFL Coaches

Barry Shehy, Barry Sheehy. Little Brown and Company, $35 (256pp) ISBN 978-0-316-59189-8

Philadelphia Daily News sportswriter Didinger has put together interviews with present and former coaches in the NFL who reveal the secrets that, they claim, have made them successful and that might also be applied to the business world. Perhaps inspired by the career of Vince Lombardi, most of the participants here stress preparation, particularly in the basics, as the key ingredient in gridiron victory. Four of the best-Bud Grant, Bill Walsh, George Seifert and Chuck Noll-also emphasize the importance of adaptability, and all 10 believe in the power of motivation, which is where coaches come in, although only Marty Schottenheimer and Mike Ditka specifically refer to the value of communication. Most business self-help titles furnish charts, checklists and concise tips for ready reference; the format here is straight text. Football players and business execs not put off by gridiron analogies should find the book helpful. Photos. (Sept.)
