Me Two

Mary C. Ryan. Little Brown and Company, $16.95 (179pp) ISBN 978-0-316-76376-9

Although Wilf has done all right in school until now, crowded classes and too many teachers make seventh grade hard work. Wilf decides he can learn well enough by osmosis, but when his report card does not support this belief, he is grounded for three months. Then Wilf stumbles upon an idea for an experiment that he is sure will earn him an A in science--he sends away for a kit to grow ``Oceanpups.'' However, instead of hatching the pups, he creates a clone of himself. Wilf thinks his clone may be able to solve his academic difficulties but it succeeds only in creating new problems for the boy. Despite somewhat shallow characterizations, this wacky, spirited novel will hold readers' interest with its humor and originality. Ages 8-12. (May)
