While this is a fairly standard Christmas collection, it fails to ignite any spark or spirit of the season. At least a part of this can be attributed to the illustrations, some of which resemble still life paintings: a row of jars; pantry shelves, an empty chair in a living room. And almost all of the animalsa squirrel on a skinny evergreen branch, a kitten climbing a Christmas tree, a shaggy red dogare badly proportioned, with and have strange angles to them. The pictures for ""The Elves and the Shoemaker'' show a lifeless, dummylike man, cutting through thick leather with one hand, holding another piece close to a flame. It's unfortunate, because the various stories, poems, carols and explanation of traditions are interesting and have been thoughtfully chosen. (All ages
