Tales from the Front

Cheryl Lavin, Laura Kavesh. Doubleday Books, $16.95 (240pp) ISBN 978-0-385-24159-5

The authors of the syndicated column ""Tales from the Front''which they describe as ``just a place where people could share their tales of falling in love and falling out of love and starting all over again''here present a collection of letters from their readers. The trials (preponderant) and triumphs of singlehood are explored in witty, sometimes bittersweet vignettes about love affairs and courtship. In the singles scene depicted by the letter writers, who range in age from 13 to 87 and include the married as well as seekers, there is a high degree of angst. The authors assign soubriquets like Ms. Picky-Picky-Picky, Mr. Gotta Keep Moving On and the Telephone Answering Machine Junkie to the hapless performers in these mostly unromantic stories of ``woe and Wow.'' First serial to Glamour. (February 14)
