Lisa Norby. Random House Books for Young Readers, $2.95 (102pp) ISBN 978-0-394-89604-5

Jan, Karen, Amy, Beth and Sara, members of the new fifth-grade club called the Stars, are the arch-rivals of the snobby Clovers, presided over by Holly Hudnut. The five Stars live in a new subdivision, and are not socially acceptable to the pseudo-cool Clovers. In The Holly Hudnut Admiration Society , the first book, Jan refuses Holly's invitation to join the Clovers. The competition between the two clubs heats up in Rent-a-Star , when the Clovers start bragging about their new clubhouse; the jealous Stars get a building of their own, and discover it is a landmark. In Crazy Campout , the Stars plan to rough it in tents for the weekend, only to have the Clovers arrive right next door--in a sleek RV. In Twin Trouble , it appears the Clovers might come out on top at last, because the Stars club might be breaking up. Like many series, this one is formula-based: the nice girls habitually triumph over the snobs, and the stories often are told from more than one point of view. But the characters seem a little more substantial than the general types cast in series, and Saunders and Norby depict more of the girls' inner feelings than usual. Ages 8-11. (Mar.)
