R. M. Schneider, Richard Schneider. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), $13.95 (1pp) ISBN 978-0-395-72771-3

Graphic designer Schneider's first book for children uses a clever visual technique to introduce youngsters to the meaning of action words. With the help of inventive cut-paper illustrations, 26 alphabetically arranged, single-syllable verbs do their thing to the word ""it."" Illustrating the concept of ""eat,"" for example, the letters ""i"" and ""t"" are pictured side by side on a spoon-having been scooped out of a bowl and nibbled. On the following page, a Band-Aid has been placed over these same two letters (""fix it""). ""It"" is also seen emerging from an eggshell (""hatch it""), superimposed on two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle (""join it""), placed within a knot in a rope (""tie it"") and sprouting from a flowerpot (""water it""). This lighthearted volume will certainly help youngsters understand what verbs are all about-in short, they'll get it. Ages 3-7. (Aug.)
