Giant Had No Heart

Linda Allen. Philomel Books, $13.95 (40pp) ISBN 978-0-399-21446-2

Motifs from Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk intertwine in this Scandinavian fairy tale. Ashiepattle, the youngest prince, sets off to rescue his six older brothers who, with their new brides, have been turned to stone by a giant with no heart. Aided by a beautiful princess and by several forest animals eager to repay his kindness, Ashiepattle discovers and obtains the giant's heart, which is lodged in an egg on a far-off island. With it, he forces the giant to release his stone prisoners, and the seven brothersnow accompanied by seven bridesreturn home to a marvelous feast. This telling does justice to the details of the story, although it lacks the satisfying clarity of the art. Allen's first book features illustrations with a folkloric, old-world elegance that perfectly suits the tale. They are enhanced by delicate, decorative borders that are reminiscent of rosemaling.
