Fleeing from hounds and huntsmen, Fox takes refuge in the church hallunaware he has positioned himself among the items for the next day's rummage sale. In the morning he is scooped up by benign old Lucy Trot, who thinks she has found the perfect stole. Seeing his opportunity, Fox proposes an exchangehe will keep her neck warm if she in turn will look after himand soon settles into a new life of luxury and treats. This is amiable but unexceptional fare, pleasant enough but not very filling in the end. Children will appreciate the silliness of the mix-up at the rummage sale, although the events preceding and following are easily forgotten. The illustrations are bright and lively and contain some amusing touches, but rely on overdrawn, caricatured, cartoony expressions. Ages 3-6. (March)
