Daylighters

Rachel Caine. NAL, $17.99 (352p) ISBN 978-0-451-41427-4

Caine provides a satisfying conclusion to her long-running Morganville Vampires series. Claire Danvers returns to Morganville, Tex., with her closest friends after a stint at grad school in Boston. Morganville looks different, with spruced-up buildings and smiling townspeople. The Daylighters have taken over, and their leader plans to rid the town of vampires. Claire's friend Michael is forced into a vampire enclave, an electronic collar slapped on his neck, and his marriage to Eve nullified. The premise has a Nazi vibe, heightened by the Daylighter symbols found all over Morganville. Michael's friends, the Glass House, and the town ghost lend aid to free the imprisoned vamps. Claire's bipolar vampire boss adds dark humor to the fast-moving plot, Shane's romance with Claire progresses, and for sharp readers there's a historical Easter egg. Ages 18%E2%80%93up. Agent: Lucienne Diver, the Knight Agency. (Nov.)
