One Sheep, Blue Sheep

Thom Wiley, illus. by Ben Mantle. Scholastic/Cartwheel, $6.99 (12p) ISBN 978-0-545-40284-2

Errant buckets of paint left around a farm turn five sheep from white to red, yellow, blue, green, and purple. Along the way, paint cans fly through the air, and the sheep slip and slide and dump paint on each other, Gatorade-style (cotton ball–shaped die-cuts show off each sheep’s new color). Wiley’s verse incorporates a few sly nursery rhyme references (the sheep’s fleece is initially “as white as snow” and later the farmer “laughed to see such sport”), and Mantle’s illustrations are both full of color and slapstick action. Up to age 3. (June)
