Daring the Devil

Leslie LaFoy. Fanfare, $5.5 (368pp) ISBN 978-0-553-58042-6

Set in 1835 Charleston, Mass., LaFoy's (Reckless) novel follows wealthy businessman Aiden Terrell's quest for his crazy stepbrother, Jules, a man who commits heinous murders in a sick rivalry over their father's estate. Dressed as a boy, Darcy O'Keefe, a smart and beautiful professional pickpocket, targets Aiden but is caught in the act. When he realizes Darcy's true identity, the clever and controlling Aiden bribes her to help in his search for Jules. The two battle their conflicting feelings of affection for and mistrust of one another. Eventually, the scales of power between the two balance--once Darcy realizes she can outwit Aiden whenever his frustrations lead him to drink. Despite often plodding dialogue, the conflict is fresh, and the dramatic tension among the interesting cast of characters won't disappoint. (Sept.)
