Daniel's Dinosaurs

Mary Carmine. Scholastic, $12.95 (27pp) ISBN 978-0-590-44638-9

In this appealing flight of fancy, New Zealanders Carmine and Baynton present a cartoony celebration of a boy obsessed by dinosaurs. Daniel reads, draws, writes, imagines and finally sees dinosaurs everywhere--playing badminton next door, checking groceries at the supermarket, frolicking in the classroom. His impatient mother, trying to distract the boy, suggests a trip to the aquarium. The two spend a long time looking at tide pools, stingrays and octopuses, but when they come to the sharks, they ``stayed for a very long time indeed.'' The result? Mother succeeds in weaning Daniel from dinosaurs, but a new creature has captured his fancy. This amusing though somewhat slight tale is sure to connect with similarly inclined children. Ages 2-7.
