Women Make the Best Friends: A Celebration

Lois Wyse. Simon & Schuster, $19.95 (192pp) ISBN 978-0-684-80188-9

This chirpy collection of anecdotes interspersed with quotes and lines of verse, compiled by Wyse, an author (Grandchildren Are So Much Fun I Should Have Had Them First) and a contributing editor to Good Housekeeping magazine, testifies to the importance of friendship in women's lives. The accounts of early childhood, school and adult friendships describe the strong bonds forged between females, with only a few stories about male-female relationships included. Sources for most of Wyse's examples of friendship experiences, which range from the mildly insightful to the syrupy and banal, are not given, but one instance was contributed by journalist Nina Totenberg, and several are obviously drawn from the author's life.
