Is Anyone Home?

Ron Maris. Greenwillow Books, $16 (18pp) ISBN 978-0-688-05899-9

In the tradition of My Book, a runner-up for the Kate Greenaway Medal, talented author-illustrator Maris combines a simple story line with detailed artwork. Led by a young boy and his dog, readers are taken on a discovery of what lies behind the garden gate. By turning half pages in between each double spread, doors open to the hen house, the greenhouse, the horse stall, the dog house and Grandpa's shed. A surprise is revealed behind each page. Scenes provide plenty to look at, with hidden snails, tiny ants, ladybugs, hiding frogs and butterflies. Not being able to see the boy's face until the last page, however, limits one's ability to be drawn fully into this wonderfully scenic tour. (2-6)
