Somewhere Just Beyond

In this short, sobering first novel, Callie's annual stay at her Aunt Lil's takes an unexpected turn when Callie's grandmother falls seriously ill. Shocked at the sight of the suddenly frail old woman, Callie's initial reaction is to run away and, later, to occupy herself with chores in the unkempt garden. Flooded with memories of her grandmother in happier times, Callie must find the strength to say goodbye to her. The details of the family's rural existence, lighthearted rivalries and traditions are keenly described, and the slow pace of the story is in keeping with Callie's sorrowful state. Ages 8-12. (Oct.)
