The sun sets, and all the swamp critters are still asleep. But as the sky darkens, owl, frog, alligator, mouse and turtle awaken and get busy in Hurd's delightful pop-up book. Fireflies flicker with the spin of a wheel and catfish swirl through the swamp waters. The turtle sticks his head out of the shell but tucks everything up as he gets sleepy, toward dawn. Hurd's palette ranges from fuchsia bright to dusky blue skies. And there are plenty of tabs and flaps to lift and tug in a book that provides a fun lesson on the habits of nocturnal animals, while fancifully capturing night's many moods. (2-5)
