Creating fiber art for religious use can be a daunting task. But this book, offering a wealth of historical information, and inspiring ideas and confidence in the reader, is a helpmeet worthy of the name. Guidelines, clearly illustrated with line drawings, explain how the reader can construct decorative objects for synagogue (Torah and pulpit covers, ark curtains and panels), personal (skullcaps and Tallit) and home use (table and bread cloths, pillows and mezuzah cases). The author discusses figurative motifs accessible to the beginner and the veteran. One could wish for more than the 13 color plates provided, but abundant black-and-white photographs compensate, exhibiting antique and contemporary designs that include Salomon's own gold-encrusted pieces.
