Mash Up!: How to Use Your Multiple Skills to Give You an Edge, Earn More Money and Be Happier

Ian Sanders and David Sloly. Kogan Page, $19.95 (256p) ISBN 978-0-7494-6590-2

Sanders and Sloly use edgy language and, at least in the book's early pages, drop some big names (q&a's with Dave Stewart, formerly of the Eurythmics, and Kevin Roberts, CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi) to introduce their big idea%E2%80%94"mashing" or "going plural" with your talents is essential in this fast-moving world. The authors try to help readers identify the skills that give them the edge, understand what "drives" them, and how to craft their story and promote marketable skills. Brief interviews with individuals are sprinkled throughout; the questions are awkward%E2%80%94"So tell us about your multidimensional talents?"; "When did you transition to go plural?"%E2%80%94and have predictable answers. The authors' identification of some of their own skills as "communicating ideas" and "inspiring change" may not give all readers confidence that this book will help them redefine their own skills. But the message that employers today are seeking not specialists but workers with a range of talents and skills could help job seekers prepare and present themselves optimally. (Oct.)
