The Bloody City: A Mediaeval Mystery

C.B. Hanley. History/Mystery (IPG, dist.), $14.95 trade paper (224p) ISBN 978-0-7524-9704-4

Set in the spring of 1217, Hanley’s absorbing second medieval mystery (after 2012’s Sins of the Father) finds Edwin Weaver, trusted servant of the Earl of Surrey, participating in a military effort to recapture the city of Lincoln from the French. Weaver is awkward on a horse and knows nothing about fighting, but his previous success finding a murderer and his general cleverness get him singled out for a special mission: to sneak into the city (special knocks are involved, as is swinging from a rope) and sniff out traitors. Hanley provides a wealth of historical details—about prayer, attire, and the building of a cathedral “in the modern style.” Curious and observant, Weaver registers the particulars of a place that is as new to him as it is to readers, and ponders his place in life. Fans will look forward to seeing more of this fine hero. (June)
