Robots

Illus. by Andy Parker, Kingfisher, $16.99 (42p) ISBN 978-0-7534-6427-4

The emphasis in this pop-up is not on the androids of science fiction or the robots found in the toy aisle, but rather on the scientific applications of robots. The book contains nine press-out play pieces that can be constructed into four robots—a moon rover, an underwater rover, a volcanobot, and a tomb rover. After building the robots (some children may need help piecing together the delicate parts), readers can incorporate them into four stage-like pop-up scenes including a sunken pirate ship and a mummy's tomb. Prompts ("Which robot can get inside the crater?") encourage readers to consult the "Operator's Manual," at the left of each scene, which describes each robot's function and capabilities. Ages 3–6.
