Repetitive urban fantasy conceits—a strong woman with a hot male sidekick, secret organizations, and almost limitless psychic powers—undermine this quick-moving series launch. San Francisco psychic Nola O'Grady uses her mysterious oracular and clairvoyant skills at the behest of her anonymous handlers, who work for a supersecret U.S. government agency. Directed to work with attractive Interpol officer Ari Nathan, she must discover who is using silver bullets to commit a series of murders. The killings may be connected to al-Qaeda, as well as to the death of Nola's brother Patrick. This complex investigation is almost as daunting as coping with her quirky Catholic family. Breakneck plotting, punning, and romance make for a mostly fast, fun read, but unembellished writing, simplistic characterization, and clumsy handling of religious elements nullify the story's original qualities.
