BICEPS OF DEATH

David Stukas, . . Kensington, $22 (304pp) ISBN 978-0-7582-0630-5

Stukas's fourth campy cozy (after 2003's Wearing Black to the White Party ) to feature prudish Robert Wilsop, promiscuous pal Michael Stark and their brainy, brawny buddy, Monette (soccer star of the Leaping Lesbians of Park Slope), tickles rather than titillates. The murder of body trainer Eric Bogert, who tossed a CD-ROM into Robert's gym bag the day before getting pushed off the balcony of his Manhattan high-rise apartment, sets off a chain of misadventures, since the CD-ROM contains lurid movies of some of New York's rich and famous acting out their sexual fantasies. Apparently, at least one of the inadvertent movie stars is willing to kill to preserve his anonymity, and when it becomes known that Robert has the CD-ROM, Robert becomes a moving target. Robert and Monette interview a number of suspects, including a Republican mayoral candidate, a hot fashion designer, a televangelist and a wealthy art collector, while the shameless Michael takes an independent and illegal tack. The mystery hangs together quite nicely, though it's largely secondary to the slings and arrows with which Stukas skewers the gay, the straight and the twisted. Agent, Alison J. Picard. (Sept. 7)
