Mirabelle and the Bouncy Red Ball

Michael Muller. Workman, $6.95 (10p) ISBN 978-0-7611-7165-2

Mirabelle the Boston terrier, already the star of a line of greeting cards inspired by Muller's real-life pet, headlines a new board book series. Mirabelle's bespectacled owner, one Mr. Muller, is a dapper co-star in a suit, bowtie, and saddle shoes; his one-way conversations with Mirabelle compose the book's text: "'Good morning, Mirabelle!' says Mr. Muller. 'What would you like to do today? Do you want to play catch with your bouncy red ball, Mirabelle?' " Understated backgrounds keep the focus on dog, owner, and ball%E2%80%94a sidewalk, a bit of foliage, and a ghost of a cloud provide the setting for Mirabelle and Mr. Muller's outdoor jaunt. Despite evident attention to the book's design and Mr. Muller's closing comment that "Every day is an adventure with you, Mirabelle," readers may find the dog's escapade too mild to sustain much interest.
