FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE BIBLE

Mike MacIntosh, . . Cook, $16.99 (217pp) ISBN 978-0-7814-4136-0

MacIntosh (Falling in Love with Prayer ), the pastor of a 10,000-plus member megachurch in San Diego, Calif., seeks all that is cutting edge and larger-than-life in ministry, though this book doesn't always shine with originality. He challenges fellow evangelical Christians to dig deep within the pages of scripture for their very life source. MacIntosh's heart and voice are communicated simply on every page as he underscores the necessity of regular and systematic Bible study for a Christian's inner development and subsequent outer transformation. Citing the Bible as the Christian's "owner's manual," MacIntosh enthusiastically tells believers and nonbelievers alike that its contents will unequivocally provide direction for life, enhance both emotional and mental well-being, yield significant fruit and even confer sound financial principles. Those new to the Christian faith will welcome the author's discussion of such topics as distorted images of the Bible, how a community protects and nourishes its participants and the intrinsic value of searching for biblical truth. MacIntosh is clearly sincere and fervid in his mission to exhort Christians to read their Bibles, yet the lack of fresh material may not be enough to hold the interest of more experienced believers.
