Starting with a history of awareness of AIDS, this volume of the Encyclopedia of Health series takes an investigative tone, tracking the epidemic globally and offering a statistical analysis of cases. The search for cures, the work of the Center for Disease Control, ramifications of AIDS testing programs and material on discrimination and caring for victims are included. This addition to the growing library of AIDS material for teenagers is strongest on epidemiological detective work; the chapter on protecting oneself from the disease is generally good, but occasionally falters in its glibness, such as the author's admonishment to only have sex with ``safe people.'' He does not, however, offer teenagers suggestions as to how they can broach the subject of drug use or sexual histories with potential partners. Ages 12-up. (Feb.)
