Civil Rights Leaders profiles Jesse Jackson, James Weldon Johnson, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Thurgood Marshall, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Asa Philip Randolph and Walter White. Shapers of America covers Richard Allen, Mary McLeod Bethune, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman and Booker T. Washington. The brief biographical sketches are arranged alphabetically; each is accompanied by a black-and-white illustration of varying quality.
