Jane Freilicher: Paintings

Long a kind of cult figure in the New York art world, Freilicher is a witty, wise metaphysical realist with a taste for painting Hamptons outdoors scenes and New York City indoor still lifes. The reproductions here manage to capture the oddly fluorescent quality of her canvases, and her most recent works included in this titlea series of Long Island sunsetsnearly outdo the rest. Poet and best-friend Ashbery provides a trenchant overview of the woman and her work, while art critic Yau's meanderings seem appropriate for his quicksilver subject. (November)
