Those Darn Dithers

Sid Hite. Henry Holt & Company, $15.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-8050-3838-5

Hite invites readers back to Willow County, ""a place so flush with time its residents have plenty to spare,"" to rejoin the colorful characters first introduced in Dither Farm. Here the Dithers embark on a whole new series of adventures, intermingled with romantic encounters as well as hilarious twists of fate. Having recovered from their magic carpet escapade, the multi-talented Dither children follow individual pursuits. Holly and her horse, Dan, star in a Wild West show at Queen's Playland. At home, Emmet puts together a vaudeville gala with the help of the lovely Contessa Cunningham, the owner of a dancing pig. Younger brother Archibald spends most of his time trying to raise the sinking spirits of his friend Carl. Meanwhile, down the road from Dither Farm, Great Aunt Emma buries herself in her latest scientific project, the construction of an ""Astral Projector,"" as her philosophical husband, Leopold, broods over the (possible) publication of his masterpiece, The Comprehensive Guide. Orchestrated like a five- (or more) ring circus, this lively romp is more animated yet less focused than the author's previous works, and readers not already acquainted with the Dithers may feel overwhelmed. However, Hite's dry humor, homespun style and appreciation for small-town life remain potent lures. Ages 12-up. (Nov.)
