CHRISTIANITY: A Follower's Guide

Imagine being new to the Christian faith, somewhat befuddled by the "insider" lingo, the liturgy, the lifestyle; now remedy that confusion with a handbook composed of the basic information essential to a follower of Christ. Briscoe (pastor of Bent Tree Bible Fellowship in Dallas) has compiled the works of such compelling scholars and writers as Calvin Miller, Charles Swindoll, Max Lucado, Kay Arthur, Henry Blackaby and Joni Eareckson Tada, all of whom outlay the foundations of Christian faith. The book makes heavy theological matters digestible, as when the authors discuss complicated aspects of the Trinity. But Briscoe doesn't leave Christians standing at the door of the church after a discourse on the fundamentals of faith. He invites them inside and introduces them to the nitty-gritty of vibrant Christian living. Readers are treated to persuasive sections on finding their personal mission in life; how God communicates with Christians; understanding sin, suffering and servanthood; and developing worship, prayer and evangelism. Specifically, the topic of giving exemplifies the hands-on style with which each area of study is treated: Howard Dayton of Crown Ministries cites 2,350 biblical verses dealing with money, and advises Christians to "avoid debt, seek counsel, practice honesty, give generously, spend wisely, work hard, save consistently, and train your children." Those new to the Christian faith (or not) will find this compilation energizing and dramatically transforming. (July)
