Playbook For Progressives: 16 Qualities of the Successful Organizer

Eric Mann. Beacon, $15 trade paper (232p) ISBN 978-0-8070-4835-4

With this simple, succinct book, Mann aims for a tiny%E2%80%94but committed%E2%80%94niche of readers dedicated to social change, with the first half addressing the 12 roles of a successful organizer, and the second introducing the organizer's 16 qualities. Though readers looking for action-oriented plans will be disappointed, Mann (Katrina's Legacy) does minimally address the "how" of organized activism at the end. There is always hope, for "in dark times%E2%80%A6we organize." He offers some action items for readers, asking (and then offering answers to the question): "How will you answer the call?" The book shines brightest when Mann describes his personal connections to activists such as Dr. Martin Luther King or Malcolm X. He describes the "transformative experience" Bill Fletcher had as a 13-year-old in 1967 when he read the Autobiography of Malcolm X. In addition to his descriptions of a successful organizer's qualities and roles, his insider view of activism, and his thorough knowledge of participants and parties through the years, gives this book its value.
