A Child's First Prayers

Dee Ann Grand. Kregel Kidzone, $12.99 (24pp) ISBN 978-0-8254-5504-9

PreS-Gr 2-Designed for young children, this collection of short and simple prayers covers a broad range of subjects and circumstances: thankfulness for a healthy body, for good parents, for friends; petitions for blessings upon the animals of the world, upon meals, during sickness or sadness; and adaptations of such texts as the Lord's Prayer and the 23rd Psalm. Columns along the outside edges of the pages contain additional exhortations such as ""God is always listening"" or ""Even when you are sound asleep, Jesus is watching over you."" Roederer's illustrations feature round-headed children of various ethnicities and lots of color in the settings. Although some prayers, addressed simply to God, Lord, or Heavenly Father, are appropriate in many religious traditions, others addressed to Jesus or spoken"" in Jesus' name"" will generally limit the book's audience to Christian families. Even so, many libraries will want to include the book in their religion sections, and bookstores will certainly want to carry the title. The board book pages are bound inside a sturdy hardcover.-Coop Renner, Fairmeadows Elementary, Duncanville, TX
