John Hejduk. Rizzoli International Publications, $60 (399pp) ISBN 978-0-8478-1684-2

In this large scrapbook, architect Hejduk playfully speculates on the fundamentals of his discipline through drawings, sketches, doodles, cartoons and free-verse poems. Dean of Manhattan's Cooper Union architecture school, he presents 73 visionary projects with titles like ``Institute for Perspective Investigations,'' ``Tower of Betrayal,'' ``Library for Books on Heaven and Hell'' and ``Necropolis: Cemetery for the Deaths of Architecture.'' In his introduction, Dutch architect/critic van den Bergh aptly calls this book ``a kind of many-folded space, a labyrinth, or a maze'' that enriches architecture's vocabulary of forms. Architects and students will likely be the primary audience for this album, whose innovative or fanciful designs for houses, studios, museums, chapels and hospitals emerge out of investigations of basic geometric forms.
