The Remarkable Howe Cavern Story

Dana Cudmore. Overlook Press, $14.95 (192pp) ISBN 978-0-87951-387-0

Located in the rolling hills of Schoharie County, N.Y., 35 miles from Albany, Howe Caverns attracts an estimated 250,000 tourists annually. When Lester Howe, an eccentric farmer, opened his cave to the public in 1843, visitors spent eight to 10 hours there at a stretch; they carried lanterns and emerged cold, wet and caked with mud. Now they descend by elevator and walk along smooth, well-lighted brick paths for a one-and-a-half-hour tour. Cudmore, who has worked at Howe Caverns as a guide, chronicles the discovery, exploration and development of this geological wonder, its high large rooms, stream, lake and stunning rock formations lying nearly 200 feet below ground. Citing reactions of early visitors and recalling some of the florid descriptions of yesteryear, the author notes other caves in the area. Spelunkers and local history buffs will relish this engaging account. (Dec.)
