As a painter of animals, Stubbs's range was much broader than the pictures of horses and dogs for which he is best known. His Sleeping Leopard and Rhinoceros are magnificent examples of his virtuosity. Also included here are his disturbingly clinical anatomical drawings and perceptive portraits of human beings. PW particularly enjoyed the work's embodiment of ""the sublime lyrical poetry'' that make many compare him to Gainsborough and Reynolds. (March)
