Critic Harrison notes in the introduction that Cecil Beaton considered photography as ""a kind of refuge for failed artists.'' But this bookfashion photographer Bailey's selection of over 150 color and black-and-white shots by various photographersproves otherwise. Edward Steichen is represented by a shot of a Super-Deco lady against a Super-Deco backdrop that appeared in a 1925 issue of Vogue. Louis Faurer's women from the 1950s are as perfect as Grace Kelly. And Diane Arbus, the maven of the grotesque, provides a winning photo of a gauche little girl in a luxurious garden. (November)
