Fresh from the Garden: Time Honored Recipes from the Readers of Texas Gardener

. Texas Gulf Coast Gardener, $19.95 (224pp) ISBN 978-0-914641-05-6

This attractive cookbook, comprising 280 dishes contributed by the readersof Texas Gardener magazine (where Miller is managing editor), won't intimidate readers who are novices in the kitchen or garden. Uniformly simple and hearty recipes for salads, soups, entrees, breads and desserts utilize a wide variety of fruits and vegetablesranging from the familiar apples, strawberries, eggplant and squash to less familiar crops like Swiss chard and kohlrabi. But there are too many dishes with eponymous titles (Aunt Ethel's pear relish, Barbara's fried okra, Grandpa Rock's pregnant pickles, Journalist's zucchini, Brad's fresh peach milk shake), yield is omitted frequently, and the gardeners/contributors list among the ingredients frozen vegetables, canned soups and prepared foods like Cheeze Whiz. Guides to produce selection, canning and freezing, and conversion tables are included. Illustrations. (August 7)
