Provocative, sociologically attuned, at times outrageous, the work of the eight sculptors profiled in this catalogue goes beyond such easy labels as ``conceptual,'' ``New Object'' or ``Neo-Geo.'' Annette Lemieux evokes history with a helmet or a vintage typewriter; her assemblages seem ghostlike fragments of a forgotten order. Katharina Fritsch makes manifest the dreamlike and otherworldly in the Madonna of Lourdes or her friendly, lifesize green Elephant . Jeff Koons cheerfully subverts Louis XIV statues, homey knickknacks and Dutch genre painting. Julian Opie's aluminum boxes, lit from within by fluorescent tubes, are eerie modern icons. Also here are Grenville Davey's painted steel constructions, Juan Munoz's fierce ``psychomechanical'' puppets, Robert Gober's antiseptic sinks and latrines, Haim Steinbach's ``non-readymades'' constructed from found objects. The album documents an exhibit at the Newport Harbor Art Museum in Newport Beach, Calif. (July)
